The reduction in the output of the Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) is a preventive measure, Energy Minister Iva Petrova told the parliamentary Energy Committee on Wednesday. The plant reduced the output of its two units on Tuesday due to the continuing decrease in the level of the Danube River.
Petrova also said that fundamental technical solutions have been sought to maintain the level of the Danube or to use other water reservoirs, and there is a report from the Kozloduy NPP suggesting four possible measures. Most of these solutions have a medium-term implementation horizon; they could not happen at the moment with these low levels of the Danube, she explained.
The Minister also stated that energy facilities are ready for the winter season with the State-owned company Bulgargaz having secured sufficient quantities of natural gas for the winter season. According to her, the Chiren underground gas storage facility guarantees the provision of the necessary quantities for the winter months.
Petrova also said that activities related to the repair of Sofia’s heat transmission network are still being carried out, but there are assurances from the energy provider Toplofikatsiya Sofia that it will be ready at the start of the heating season. She explained that problems with the company continue due to its obligations to Bulgargaz and the Bulgarian Energy Holding.
