BREAKING NEWS: Lindsay Clancy Case Headed to Mistrial After Judge William Sullivan Gives Defense an Hour to Appeal 2026

Judge William Sullivan has declared a mistrial in the sensational criminal trial of Lindsay Clancy — the Massachusetts mom accused of murdering her three children in the midst of an alleged postpartum psychosis.

Sullivan declared the mistrial after more than six days of deliberations and the jury of nine women and three men repeatedly telling the court they could not reach a verdict.

The jury voiced its “deepest regrets” at being unable to reach a verdict.

Clancy’s lawyer, Kevin Reddington — who objected to Sullivan’s decision — immediately requested an appeal, prompting Sullivan to

Clancy, 36,  admitted in a separate civil case to killing her three children: Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and Callan, 8 months. Clancy admitted to strangling the children with exercise bands and leaving them in the basement office of their father, Patrick Clancy. She committed the murders in January 2023 before attempting to take her own life.

The case drew national and even international attention, and prompted dissection and discussion about postpartum healthcare, maternal healthcare, mental health, and parenthood.

Lindsay was charged with three counts of murder, and her defense team, led by Reddington, argued she could not be held criminally responsible due to reason of insanity, and insisted she was suffering from both postpartum psychosis and bipolar disorder.

Per the Mayo Clinic, postpartum psychosis is “a rare condition that usually develops within the first week after delivery.” It also “may lead to life-threatening thoughts or behaviors and requires immediate treatment.”

Clancy faced five potential outcomes:

  • First-degree murder: The most serious offense would find Lindsay guilty of planning and intentionally killing Cora, Dawson, and Callan. The charge carries a mandatory sentence of life in prison without parole.
  • Second-degree murder: In Massachusetts, second-degree murder includes killings that do not fall under first-degree murder and that are not premeditated but are committed with the intent to cause harm and conceived with malice. The charge carries a sentence of life in prison with the potential of parole.
  • Manslaughter: The judge added manslaughter as a potential outcome before the jury went into deliberations. The conviction has a maximum 20-year sentence per count, and would indicate the jury believes Lindsay accidentally killed her children “by wanton and reckless conduct.”
  • Not guilty by reason of insanity: Lindsay’s team has argued she is not guilty by reason of insanity and built their defense around the outcome Lindsay’s legal team did not have to prove she was mentally ill — in Massachusetts, the prosecution team had to prove she was not. This conviction results in Lindsay remaining in the care of a mental health facility.
  • Not guilty: This conviction would allow Lindsay to be free.

Throughout the weeks of the trial, jurors learned Lindsay experienced postpartum anxiety following the births of Cora and Dawson. The details of the trial examined her relationship with her providers and with medication.

She and her husband enlisted the help of a nanny, and family members often stayed with the Clancy family to help with the children. Lindsay, who began working part-time as a labor and delivery nurse after Cora’s birth, took 18 weeks of maternity leave after Callan was born and said her symptoms became difficult to bear as her maternity leave was ending.

She began to seek help from multiple medical providers and was prescribed a litany of medications. The prosecution argued she wasn’t always honest with her providers about what medication she was taking and for how long. She was diagnosed with generalized anxiety in September 2022 and prescribed talk therapy and Zoloft; a doctor also completed a form at the time that extended her maternity leave.

Lindsay opted to stop using Zoloft due to side effects and was prescribed Ativan the following month. She was prescribed a third medication, Buspar, in October 2022 but didn’t take it; she reported intrusive thoughts in December of the same year. Lindsay voluntarily checked herself into inpatient psychiatric care on Jan. 1, 2023.

By all accounts and trial testimony, the day Lindsay killed her children began typically. She took her daughter to the doctor for a stomachache, built snowmen with the children, and texted with her husband. Patrick left the home around 5:15 p.m. that night to pick up a takeout order and medicine for Cora. He returned at 6 p.m. Lindsay committed the murders and her own suicide attempt in the time he was gone.

Lindsay was arraigned in February 2023. Though she has admitted to the killings, she has consistently pleaded not guilty.
