Foreign Minister Velislava Petrova took part in a series of multilateral formats and bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly in New York, her Ministry said in a press release on Wednesday.
Minister Petrova took part in an informal meeting between the foreign ministers of the European Union and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC), dedicated to dialogue and cooperation between the two regions.
She held talks with UN High Commissioner for Refugees Barham Salih and participated in an event marking the 75th anniversary of the 1951 Convention relating to the Status of Refugees, which Bulgaria co-sponsored.
Petrova held bilateral meetings with the Foreign Ministers of Armenia Ararat Mirzoyan and Kyrgyzstan Jeenbek Kulubaev. The talks focused on connectivity and the development of specific partnerships. The meetings are part of efforts to deepen Bulgaria’s relations with the countries of the South Caucasus and Central Asia.
The Foreign Minister also met with US Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Brendan Hanrahan. The talks covered active political dialogue between Sofia and Washington amid growing geopolitical challenges, security in Europe, opportunities to deepen practical cooperation, and Bulgaria’s inclusion in the US Visa Waiver Program. Petrova said that lifting visa requirements for Bulgarian citizens remains a priority and would be in line with the strategic nature of relations between the two countries.
