Foster parents in Targovishte bring both experience and an innovative spirit, professionals involved in foster care emphasized here Monday during a discussion on the development of the service in the region. The discussion was part of the national “Foster Me” initiative by the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA) and the Social Assistance Agency.
More than 230 children have been placed with foster families in Targovishte since 2007, reported Ivelina Ivanova, Acting Director of the Regional Directorate for Social Assistance in Targovishte. She pointed out that a total of 136 foster families have been registered in the region, adding that their mission was driven less by prior experience or training and more by their open homes and hearts. Currently, there are 36 active foster families in the region, with 14 foster families caring for 16 children.
Targovishte Deputy Mayor Suzan Aliosmanova highlighted that after more than 15 years of development, foster care in Targovishte has become an integral part of the social infrastructure and the identity of the local community. She noted that foster care in the town has a history and a “professional track record” that began in 2011.
Professionals stressed that the child’s best interests, teamwork and continuous communication are central to foster care. Foster parents receive ongoing guidance and emotional support, particularly when caring for children with complex medical or behavioural needs. They may also support biological parents and adoptive families.
The “Foster Me” initiative is part of the project “Building the capacity of Social Assistance Agency staff in connection with the modernization of social protection systems” – Component 1, which focuses on developing foster care in Bulgaria and increasing the capacity of those involved in it, including social workers, municipal employees, foster parents and others. The project is funded under the Human Resources Development Programme, co-financed by the European Social Fund Plus.
