‘Abdication of Responsibility!’ Progressives Irate With California AG Throwing in the Towel on Paramount Lawsuit — Paving Way for CNN Takeover 2026

Progressives are irate with California Attorney General Rob Bonta for allowing the Paramount-Warner Bros. mega-merger to move forward, despite having filed a lawsuit with 11 other blue state AGs to stop it.

Bloomberg reported Monday that the states agreed to a settlement with Paramount Skydance Corp. that will pave the way for a CNN takeover.

“Settlement talks came to fruition over the weekend after four states that had opposed terms of a deal outlined with California conceded,” Bloomberg reported. “The settlement, which is expected to be announced later today, paves the way for one of the largest mergers in Hollywood history.”

Jessica J. González, co-CEO of the media advocacy group Free Press, said in a release, “We are disappointed that Attorney General Bonta went back on his promise to enforce the law and protect consumers and workers. Hundreds of thousands of people called on our state AGs to stand up to the Ellisons, who have engaged in a campaign of corruption and extortion to pave the way for this unlawful merger.”

Paramount CEO David Ellison and his father Larry Ellison are staunch allies of President Donald Trump, whose administration approved the $8 billion merger in July. Bonta led the coalition of blue states in filing suit to block the merger shortly thereafter, demanding certain concessions like full editorial independence for CNN.

“We can no longer rely on the federal government to enforce the law and protect regular people. That much is clear,”  González said. “But the AGs’ capitulation marks a new low. It’s a sad day for all of us who have been opposing this merger because it will cut jobs and raise prices, all as it consolidates the media even more to enable authoritarians.”

Other progressives took to X to vent their anger:

CNN’s Brian Stelter reported Sunday that because CBS News is owned by Paramount, “There’s talk of a combination of [CNN] with CBS News if the deal goes through.”

The Ellisons named Bari Weiss as CBS News’s editor-in-chief nearly one year ago in what was scene as a controversial appointment.
