Jon Stewart tore into President Donald Trump on Monday night after the White House revoked access for three major news organizations, accusing the president of openly disregarding constitutional protections for the press and suggesting that instead of banning the press, he simply try “presidenting better.”
CNN, MS NOW, and Politico were denied access to the White House over the weekend after Trump announced that their passes were being revoked because of what he called “FAKE NEWS.”
Trump announced the restrictions Friday on Truth Social, accusing the three organizations of spreading “FICTION and LIES” and warning that “Other Fake News Media Outlets” could follow. The affected outlets are now taking legal action over the move.
In his Daily Show opening monologue, Stewart began with the story.
“As many of you have heard if you’ve been following the news, the hottest spot in D.C. has just changed their door policy,” Stewart said on The Daily Show before playing footage of Trump complaining about a country allowing journalists to write “purposely negative” stories.
Stewart paused before adding: “Have you tried presidenting better? You could ban the press, or you could be a better f*cking president. I mean, give the press something to work with.”
“Oh, here’s a positive story: I never thought my car could take $140 worth of gas in such a small tank. I had no idea!” the comedian jibed, mocking spiked fuel costs amid the Iran war. “I had no idea. Oo-rah!”
“Have we ever had a president just flat out in the Oval Office come out against the Constitution?” he continued, launching into a Trump impression: “’What kind of a sick country doesn’t allow unlimited warrantless search and seizure? I mean, that’s not the North Korea I grew up in.’”
Tempted to give the president the benefit of the doubt, the host then suggested that perhaps the ban was just “a poor choice of words.”
“He didn’t mean to say that – ‘how can a country have a free press?’ I’m sure there’s a very thorough and thought-out legal framework and rationale for why this is not a free press ban,” he said, before cutting to footage of Trump himself referring to the move as a press ban.
Stewart seized on the wording, again in mock impersonation. “‘Are you talking about my authoritarian crackdown? Is that what you’re saying? Is that the ban you’re referring?’”
“He gives no f*cks! He gives no f*cks! He doesn’t even respect us enough to pretend he’s bound by our Constitution,” Stewart went on. “’You talking about the press ban? My press ban? Yeah. No. Yeah, we’re doing the press ban. The truth is I’d like to kill you. We send you all to camps, you know. But I still got two more years.’”
The comedian then joked that Trump had not only “betrayed your sacred oath of office,” but had condemned viewers to “endless reporter building entrance logistics stories” as journalists described being prevented from entering the White House.
Stewart then brought in Daily Show “senior White House correspondent” Desi Lydic for a mock live report on the fallout from the ban, joking that Comedy Central, too, had been barred.
Lydic appeared on screen dressed in gold against an Oval Office backdrop, joking that she had managed to sneak inside by disguising herself as one of the gold cherubs featured in Trump’s redecorated White House.
Asked by Stewart what effect the media restrictions had already had, Lydic replied: “Well, it’s been surprising and immediate. Since banning CNN, MS Now, and Politico, gas prices have plummeted to $1.98.”
She continued the bit by mocking the suggestion that excluding critical outlets had made the administration’s problems disappear: “Turns out Trump was absolutely right. CNN and MS NOW were the only reason everything was bad. Now that they’re gone, the Strait of Hormuz is open. Putin and Zelensky are adopting a baby together. And everyone loves Ed Sheeran again.”
