The White House’s new round-the-clock Trump TV video channel was barely on air before critics branded the venture a North Korea-style “state media,” as its launch collided with an escalating fight between the president and major news organizations he banned on Friday.
“TRUMP TV: The Essentials Station” went live Monday as a 24/7 stream on the White House’s YouTube channel and app. The administration says the service will carry some “greatest hits” including presidential speeches, announcements and old highlights.
The White House’s own site describes it as a constantly updated feed of the administration’s “biggest moments.”
The rollout came just days after President Donald Trump barred CNN, MS NOW and Politico from the White House. The three outlets sued the administration Monday, arguing that stripping their journalists of access because of their coverage violated the First Amendment and due-process protections.
ABC, CBS, Fox News and NBC also suspended pooled television coverage of presidential events after CNN was prevented from carrying out its scheduled pool duties.
Trump has defended the bans by accusing the outlets of publishing “FAKE NEWS” and content that threatens national security.
The White House, however, promoted its new channel with a video stitched together from television and film clips and set to a remix of The Buggles’ hit “Video Killed the Radio Star.” By Monday evening, the actual programming included reruns of Trump speeches, including his World Economic Forum address from Davos earlier this year.
At one point, over 8,000 viewers were watching, according to YouTube figures reported at the time.
The launch quickly became a target on social media. Maine Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed kept his verdict to one line: “We just want cheaper gas, man.”
California Governor Gavin Newsom (D) meanwhile mocked the effort as “truly autocratic behavior from a failed President:”
Comedian Bridget Phetasy offered a different kind of jab, harkening back to the president’s days on The Apprentice: “My God he’s done it. He’s turned the White House into a reality show.”
