Tommy Ver Elst, President of the American Chamber of Commerce in Bulgaria (AmCham Bulgaria), believes Bulgaria is well positioned for sustainable economic growth. He was speaking Monday at the opening of AmCham’s high-profile Business Breakfast with the Prime Minister and Representatives of the Bulgarian Government.
At these traditional events, the Chamber presents its priorities, outlines the key moments of achievements in the US-Bulgaria economic relationship, delivers messages for improvement of the bilateral ties.
Participating are Prime Minister Rumen Radev and a number of his government ministers.
One of Bulgaria’s greatest assets today is its people, Ver Elst said. He noted that the country’s strategic location, industrial capabilities, potential for innovation and energy resources also provide a strong foundation for long-term economic success and increased competitiveness.
According to Ver Elst, having a stable government with a broad parliamentary majority sends a strong message to citizens, investors and the international community, and creates an opportunity to advance long-awaited reforms.
In his words, AmCham is “a constructive factor” in this process. He added that the Chamber can contribute expertise, analysis and practical solutions to support economic growth, attract investment and preserve Bulgaria’s competitiveness.
The United States remains one of Bulgaria’s most important economic partners, Ver Elst said. He noted that the US is among the country’s six leading foreign investors, with more than 100 US companies operating in Bulgaria and providing high-value-added jobs for more than 40,000 people.
Among the key areas for cooperation with the government, he identified economic growth and competitiveness, energy, digital transformation and artificial intelligence, healthcare, education and workforce development, as well as defence and security.
Ver Elst also said that Bulgaria should strengthen its position within the European Union and NATO, as well as in relation to its future membership in the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development.
He noted that technological developments are creating new requirements for the workforce, making it important to focus on digital skills, entrepreneurship, STEM education, leadership and communication skills, and language proficiency.
Defence and security are not only key to the country’s resilience, but can also drive economic growth, innovation and development, the AmCham president said.
At the end of his address, Tommy Ver Elst expressed hope that a direct air link between Bulgaria and the United States will be established in the near future. Such a direct connection would have a positive impact on investment, tourism and people-to-people contacts, he said.
