Balgarianovinite.com Assoc. Prof. Dr. Milena Angelova, Secretary General of the Bulgarian Industrial Capital Association (BICA) and rapporteur for the European Economic and Social Committee on the European Life Sciences Strategy, participated in the European Health Tourism Industry Summit 2026, held at the European Parliament, BICA said.
The forum brought together representatives from European institutions, businesses, and the expert community, focusing on the development of health tourism—medical, SPA, and wellness—as an important factor for enhancing Europe’s competitiveness and establishing it as a global leader in the life sciences sector.
During the discussions, Angelova stressed the need for the European Union to unlock the potential of health tourism through better integration of European health destinations into policies on healthcare, prevention, and active longevity. Together with Dr. Siyka Katsarova, Chairperson of the Bulgarian Union for Balneology and SPA Tourism and President of the European SPA Association, a call was made for more targeted actions at the European level to support the sector.
Special attention was given to Bulgaria’s potential as an established destination for balneo- and climatotherapy. The country boasts abundant mineral spring resources, a favorable climate, and long-standing traditions in health tourism, creating strong foundations for sustainable development of the sector and attracting international investment.
In this context, it was emphasized that the full development of health tourism in Bulgaria and Europe requires targeted investments in infrastructure, support for local authorities, and the development of prevention and wellness programs aimed at improving public health and quality of life.
The Bulgarian Industrial Capital Association will continue to support initiatives and policies that promote the development of health tourism as part of Europe’s modern industrial and economic policy.
