Bulgarian Defence Minister Dimitar Stoyanov and Cezary Tomczyk, Poland’s Secretary of State at the Ministry of National Defence, discussed cooperation in aviation, the defence industries and projects under the EU’s SAFE instrument at a meeting in Poland, the Bulgarian Defence Ministry said. The bilateral talks took place during Prime Minister Rumen Radev’s official visit to Poland.
One of the main topics was the possibility of Poland providing Bulgaria with spare parts for its MiG-29 fighter jets. Stoyanov thanked the Polish side for its assistance and readiness to find a practical solution to the challenges facing Bulgarian military aviation.
Every opportunity to maintain the airworthiness of the MiG-29 aircraft has a direct bearing on the protection of Bulgaria’s airspace, Stoyanov said. The Bulgarian side provided a list of the spare parts needed, and the meeting addressed Poland’s ability to supply them.
“Poland already has practical experience that Bulgaria can benefit from. It is important for us to make the most of the opportunities SAFE provides for developing defence capabilities,” the minister said.
The exchange of expert experience in acquiring and operating F-16 aircraft was also discussed. The Bulgarian side proposed holding working meetings between experts to learn from Poland’s experience in addressing practical issues related to the F-16.
The development of military-technical cooperation and the potential for implementing specific projects of mutual interest were also on the agenda, including through more active interaction between the Bulgarian and Polish defence industries. The sides noted that the bilateral cooperation programme for 2026 places an emphasis on the training and preparation of military personnel.
Earlier on Thursday, Prime Minister Rumen Radev said Poland’s assistance was Bulgaria’s only option for maintaining its MiG-29 aircraft, adding that thanks to Poland, Bulgaria was keeping its aviation in combat readiness.
