The Commission for Consumer Protection (CCP) is already inspecting petrol stations in the country for unjustified increases in retail prices of basic fuels, announced the regulator’s Chair Maya Manolova in a Facebook post on Monday.
“The inspections of petrol stations are already underway. The instruction has been signed for all CCP structures – both in Sofia and outside the capital,” said Manolova, specifying that “the inspections cover all types of facilities – regardless of whether they are single or chains, large or small, in cities or outside large settlements.”
Interim results from the inspections are expected next week, specified Manolova, who took up the post of CCP Chair on September 18 by a government decision.
“I will announce the results publicly and this will be the approach for all CCP inspections – full transparency, regardless of who the violator is,” she added.
In her publication, Manolova also announced that, in parallel with petrol stations, the CCP will also deal with the unjustified increase in prices of food and non-prescription medicines, which are within the powers of the commission, as well as with unfair clauses in the general terms and conditions and contracts for household bills and mobile services.
Fuel prices, and in particular diesel fuel, have reached record levels in many countries in Europe in the past month due to the economic consequences of the conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine. In Bulgaria, the average retail price of the most popular A95 petrol reaches EUR 1.69 per litre, and diesel fuel reaches EUR 1.96 per litre, according to data from the Fuelo platform.
On Friday the government announced a package of measures in connection with high fuel prices worth a total of over EUR 300 million. Among the measures is the abolition of the excise duty on propane and butane. Support is also envisaged in the form of subsidies for structural sectors, including public transport, school and medical transport.
