Bulgaria took a 1-0 lead against hosts Denmark in their Davis Cup World Group I tie on Friday. Bulgaria’s top player Grigor Dimitrov came from a set down to beat Elmer Moeller 6-7(2), 6-3, 6-4 in two hours and 18 minutes at the 2,800-seat Royal Stage arena in Hillerod, near Copenhagen.
“It was an extremely difficult match. I’m glad my body held up and I’m very happy with the win. I tried to take control from the very beginning, but I couldn’t at first and made some basic mistakes,” Dimitrov told bTV after the match.
The tie marks Dimitrov’s first Davis Cup appearance since 2015, when he last represented Bulgaria against Luxembourg in Europe/Africa Zone Group II. Since making his debut in 2008, he has recorded 17 singles wins and one defeat, along with four wins and three losses in doubles.
The second singles match pits Bulgaria’s Iliyan Radulov against Denmark’s top player Holger Rune.
Saturday’s programme opens with the doubles, with Alexander Donski and Pyotr Nesterov facing August Holmgren and Carl Emil Overbeck. The reverse singles will follow. The tie is decided by the first team to win three of the five matches, all played in a best-of-three-sets format.
Ivan Ivanov, the 2025 Wimbledon and US Open junior champion, is also with the Bulgarian team in Denmark.
The winner of the tie will advance to the 2027 Davis Cup Qualifiers, while the losing team will play next February to retain its place in World Group I.
