Mike Rogers, the Trump-backed GOP nominee for the U.S. Senate in Michigan, broke with the president in a stark ad on Monday – calling for an immediate end to the war in Iran.
Roger is running against progressive candidate Abdul El-Sayed, who has maintained a steady, but slim lead in the polls. Recently, polling shows even GOP support for Trump starting to sour as worries about the economy continue to linger and gas prices increase.
Rogers posted the ad to social media and wrote, “The war in Iran needs to end to bring costs down — but Michigan families can’t afford to wait. Here’s what we can do now: place a temporary embargo on Diesel exports. American energy should provide relief to American families first.”
The rising cost of energy prices due to the global energy disruption caused by the war in Iran has led to increased wholesale prices across the country.
“Michigan families are struggling with the price of everyday life. Groceries cost too much. We have to bring prices down. The war with Iran needs to end, and end quickly. When it does, energy costs will plummet,” Rogers says in the ad, making the connection.
“But Michigan families can’t afford to wait for that to happen. We need to do something now. I’ve previously called for the suspension of the state and federal gas tax, 70 cents a gallon. And another place we can start: diesel,” Rogers continues, adding:
Diesel fuels the trucks that bring groceries to the store. It fuels the tractors that grow our food. And when diesel costs more, it costs more to grow it, ship it, stock it, and ultimately buy it. So until this war is over, I’m calling for a temporary embargo on American diesel exports.
Keep more American diesel here at home. Increase the supply available to our farmers, our truckers, and put downward pressure on diesel prices. Because lowering the cost of moving and producing our food can help bring down the everyday costs families see right here at the grocery store. American energy should provide relief to American families first, and I’ll fight to make life more affordable. Michigan, let’s get to work.
Rep. Ashley Hinson (R-IA), the Republican Senate nominee in Iowa, made a similar statement to Rogers on Monday, declaring that Americans “shouldn’t have to foot the bill at the pump or the checkout line for the war in Iran.”
“Iowans are being squeezed and shouldn’t have to foot the bill at the pump or the checkout line for the war in Iran. We need to use every option at our disposal to provide some relief from high prices,” she wrote on X, adding:
That includes suspending the gas tax, pausing diesel exports, unleashing E-15 everywhere we can, reinstating the $1/gallon biodiesel tax credit, and creating a diesel relief program to help our farmers and truckers being crushed by the high costs.
While doing this, we should also ensure our highway trust fund is replenished, so that Iowans don’t suffer from crumbling roads and bridges while relief comes our way now. These actions to lower costs are needed ASAP, and the war needs to be brought to a successful and immediate end.
