Security and connectivity were among the main topics discussed by Foreign Minister Velislava Petrova during a series of bilateral meetings and international events on the first day of her programme in New York for the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, the Foreign Ministry press centre said late on Tuesday.
Petrova met with the foreign ministers of Algeria, Ahmed Attaf; of Georgia, Maka Botchorishvili; and of Chile, Francisco Perez Mackenna, as well as Qatar’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Sultan bin Saad al-Muraikhi. The talks focused on bilateral relations, political and economic dialogue, and opportunities for closer cooperation.
The meetings with the representatives of Georgia and Qatar also addressed preparations for the Regional Connectivity Summit, which Bulgaria will host in 2027, as well as opportunities to develop more secure and diversified transport, energy and economic links between Europe, the Black Sea region, the South Caucasus, the Middle East and Asia.
Petrova also met with UN Under-Secretary-General and UN Women Executive Director Sima Bahous. Bulgaria reaffirmed its support for the organization’s effective, transparent and results-oriented work, as well as for the full participation of women in public and political life, the Foreign Ministry said.
During the day, Petrova met with global economic leaders at an event organized by the World Economic Forum. She also took part in an informal meeting of EU foreign ministers in New York, attended by the foreign ministers of Australia, Japan, India and South Korea. The discussions focused on international security, the resilience of global supply chains and the need for stronger international cooperation amid growing geopolitical fragmentation.
Petrova also met with US Congressman Joe Wilson, founder and longtime co-chair of the Bulgaria Caucus in the House of Representatives. Their talks focused on the strategic partnership between Bulgaria and the United States, security and defence cooperation, and opportunities for more active political and economic dialogue.
The general debate of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly begins in New York on September 22. The Bulgarian delegation is headed by President Iliana Iotova, with Petrova also taking part in the delegation’s programme.
