The high-level meeting within the UN General Assembly session sets the political direction. It is not a forum where specific decisions are made, but it sets the tone, Foreign Minister Velislava Petrova told BTA.
She spoke to Bulgarian journalists in New York after taking part in a discussion on women’s leadership in an era of geopolitical Change, a side event held on Tuesday ahead of the opening of the high-level meeting of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly.
Petrova said she would consider it a success if more heads of state and government called for active diplomatic efforts and peace. She noted that economies and societies as a whole needed such efforts and said this was something that could unite everyone.
Multilateralism is being put to the test, Petrova said, while recalling that the UN had demonstrated its role many times.
She said the high-level meeting was a forum where countries that were currently in conflict could also be present, which could create an opportunity for dialogue, the first step towards reaching a solution.
Petrova expressed hope that upcoming high-level meetings between the United States and China, as well as with Denmark on Greenland, would lead to clear decisions.
Security and connectivity were among the main topics of Petrova’s meetings during the first day of her programme in New York.
During the discussion on women’s leadership, she highlighted women’s strengths and the need for them to play a more prominent role. Petrova also stressed Bulgaria’s strategic location, particularly in the areas of transport and energy. She recalled that Bulgaria would host a Regional Connectivity Summit next year focusing on the so-called Middle Corridor between Europe and Asia.
Speaking to Bulgarian journalists, Petrova said Bulgaria consistently emphasised in all international formats in which it participated the need for dialogue for peace and the important role of diplomacy.
She said there was no bilateral meeting planned with the delegation of the Republic of North Macedonia during the UN General Assembly session in New York.
Asked about the inspection of Bulgaria’s ambassador to the United Arab Emirates, Ivan Yordanov, which she had ordered, Petrova said it would take place in the next few weeks. She explained that she had ordered an on-site inspection rather than a documentary review, requiring a team from the Foreign Ministry to travel to the UAE.
Petrova added that Ambassador Yordanov had not yet returned to Bulgaria. He was urgently recalled last week.
