Bulgarian President Iliana Iotova met (or conferred) with leaders of major Jewish organizations in the United States during her visit to New York to attend the high-level week of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, the President’s press secretariat said on Thursday.
Iotova highlighted the historical tradition of the Bulgarian society’s tolerance. The representatives of Jewish organizations expressed (or voiced) their appreciation for Bulgaria’s role in saving the country’s Jews during the Second World War, the press release further said.
Iotova also focused on the idea of establishing a Tolerance Museum in Bulgaria. She said that the museum should not focus solely on the Holocaust and the past, but also look to the future and help prevent such events from recurring. She also stressed the importance of addressing rising antisemitism and attempts to distort history, highlighting critical thinking and education as key tools in the digital age.
On Wednesday, Iotova addressed the general debate of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly. The head of State is leading the Bulgarian delegation to the forum.
