Bill Maher argued that President Donald Trump is “flirting with” spoiling America’s “secret sauce” by going too far with his crackdown on illegal immigration.
The veteran comic made the claim during the Monday episode of his Club Random podcast, while interviewing psychiatrist and New York Times best-selling author Dr. Daniel Amen, who told Maher his father had come to America as a Lebanese immigrant and found success as a grocer.
“This is what is awesome about America, that we are flirting with ruining. We attract the best, smartest, most ambitious people, from everywhere. This is always our secret sauce,” Maher said. “And you-know-who is messing with this.”
“We did need to close the border,”
Maher was obviously referring to the president, and the doc quickly picked up on it. After Maher said “We did need to close the border,” Dr. Amen asked Maher, “you don’t think he’s messing with it in a reaction to the insanity of open borders?”
“Totally! Closing the border was something we needed to do,” Maher said. “I totally give him credit for that.”
He then started to say Trump has gone too far with his immigration crackdown, before catching himself and saying, “We don’t need to get into that.” Maher then said the reason he “still believe[s] in this country so much” is because of hard-working immigrants like Dr. Amen’s dad.
The Real Time host’s comments echo what he has said about Trump since he returned to office in 2025: illegal immigration needed to be stopped, but he felt the Trump administration has went “too far” with its ICE raids — a complaint he voiced to Vice President JD Vance in June. Maher said Vance and Trump should “own it” and admit they were too harsh.
“Here is the basic problem with that, Bill, is you cannot do any deportations without law enforcement,” Vance told him. “And you can’t do a law enforcement operation like that without having some situations that don’t look good when they’re recorded like that.”
