Jimmy Kimmel offered a tongue-in-cheek solution to White House aides reportedly frustrated by President Donald Trump‘s refusal to take the potential dangers of artificial intelligence seriously – tell him ChatGPT has the “Trump-Epstein files.”
The Jimmy Kimmel Live! host took aim at Trump after the president dismissed growing warnings about artificial intelligence as a “hoax,” despite warnings from the industry’s top leaders and even as senior administration officials have reportedly been meeting almost daily to consider possible safeguards around the technology.
Trump pushed back Monday against calls for stronger oversight of rapidly developing AI systems.
“He said the robots will not be taking over the world, which is exactly what the president says at the beginning of the movie where the robots take over the world,” Kimmel joked.
Kimmel then turned to reports of concern inside the administration, where officials have been discussing how to persuade Trump that additional protections may be necessary:
“Meanwhile, Trump’s advisers are worried about it. According to The Wall Street Journal, senior officials in the White House have been meeting almost daily to discuss ways of convincing the president to put up more guardrails against A.I. to protect us. They’re calling it ‘Operation Take Away Grandpa’s iPad.’”
He continued: “And almost every day they get together to talk about AI and develop plans for how to keep us safe, which they then bring to the president, who then tells them about his uncle who worked at MIT, eats his lunch, and falls asleep.”
Trump has argued that imposing additional restrictions could slow American innovation and hand an advantage to China, putting him at odds with technology executives who have called for stronger safeguards as AI systems become more powerful.
For Kimmel, however, the answer to breaking through was less complicated.
“If you want him to take the threat of AI seriously, it’s real simple: Tell him ChatGPT is about to release the Trump-Epstein files. I’ll bet — I’ll bet 100 bucks he’ll get Pandora stuffed right back in that box,” he said.
