Nearly 40,000 Bulgarian students abroad are beginning the new school year at Bulgarian Sunday schools, where they will learn about Bulgaria through the study of Bulgarian language, history and geography at 410 schools in 44 countries across six continents. This year, the Ministry of Education and Science is providing more than EUR 10 million for the education of the children and support for their teachers, Deputy Education and Science Minister Tanya Pancheva said at a ceremony marking the 15th anniversary of the Bulgarian Sunday School “Vasil Levski” in the southwestern German city of Saarbrucken, the Education Ministry in Sofia said on Sunday.
During the new school year, more than 140 students will attend the school and its two branches in Kaiserslautern and Homburg. There are 31 Bulgarian Sunday schools in Germany, with more than 3,700 children expected to attend them.
Pancheva said that Bulgarian Sunday schools abroad were vibrant and active centres where children could learn about their roots. She added that the schools were places where children not only studied but also made friends and felt close to Bulgaria, regardless of how far away they lived.
She congratulated the teachers, parents, school head Evelina Avramova, and Antoniy Ganev, chairman of the Friends of Bulgaria association, to which the school belongs, for their efforts to build a strong and close-knit community.
Pancheva urged the students to maintain their connection with Bulgaria, the Bulgarian language and the country’s history, saying these were the nation’s collective memory and what united Bulgarians.
During the celebration, a documentary about Alexander Battenberg, titled “A German Prince in Bulgaria, a Bulgarian Prince in Germany,” was also presented. The film was created by students and teachers under the Ministry’s “The Untold Stories of Bulgarians” programme.
The children gave musical performances and recitals, while guests took part in an improvised history lesson. Parents spoke about what the school meant to their families, while students who graduated last year received their certificates.
Pancheva presented a certificate of commendation and a congratulatory address on behalf of Education and Science Minister Georgi Valchev.
The ceremony was attended by Bulgarian Consul General in Frankfurt Diana Popova. Other guests included Rayna Mandzhukova, executive director of the Executive Agency for Bulgarians Abroad; Valeriy Radolov, director of the Bulgarian Communities and Information Activities Directorate at the Agency; Kadir Cetin of the Saarland Ministry of Education and Culture; Yvonne Bickel, a representative of the local authorities in Dudweiler; and representatives of the Friends of Bulgaria association.
