Republican strategist Karl Rove tore into his own political party on Friday, declaring the GOP is “infiltrated” with “conspiracy nuts.”
The Fox News political contributor appeared at the 2026 Atlantic Festival in New York City alongside staff writer Vivian Salama and former White House Chief of Staff Andrew Card for a conversation marking the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terror attacks.
Towards the end of their conversation, though, Salama brought up Rove’s recent announcement that he planned to vote for Jon Rosenthal, the Democrat running for the Texas Railroad Commission, over Republican Bo French after French posted blatantly racist remarks about South Asian students at the University of Texas at Austin.
“The president this week took issue with a decision that you made very publicly,” Salama said on stage Friday.
Here, the journalist was referring to President Donald Trump’s Monday Truth Social post, which read in full:
Karl Rove is so bad for the Republican Party, and completely wrong so often. He suffers from a major case of Trump Derangement Syndrome primarily because, for almost 10 years, I beat back and won against so many of the people and things that he wanted and espoused. Why does FoxNews and the WSJ keep his RINO Voice alive. The guy is a stone cold loser!
Rove then attempted a Trump impression, mimicking the president calling him “a stone cold loser.”
While Salama alleged that the president’s outburst was in response to Rove’s support of a Democratic candidate, the Republican strategist disagreed, instead chalking the criticism up to a recent appearance of his on Fox News, where he attacked Trump’s controversial plan to give every American a $5,000 check if the GOP holds the House and Senate in the midterm elections.
“I’m gonna go get hats made up that say on the front of ’em, ‘Stone Cold,’” Rove promised, before insisting, “I am a Republican. I have voted, to date, for one Democrat in my life — [Texas] Lieutenant Governor Bob Bullock in 1994.”
He continued:
Now, I’m gonna vote for Jon Rosenthal for the Texas Railroad Commission because the Republicans nominated, by a one-percent victory margin, a guy who is a bigot. You know, you may have seen that football game we had. Can you imagine being an undergraduate at the University of Texas and suffering through three quarters of number one Ohio beating the crap out of your beloved Longhorns, and 43 seconds into the fourth quarter, the quarterback connects with [Ryan] Wingo and scores, and they march back in the fourth quarter and beat ’em?
I mean, what a joyous moment that was. That stadium was just filled with these burnt orange-clad undergraduates going completely insane over what they’d just seen, and this bigot puts out a picture with a bunch of Asian-American, Latino, and black students — and white students — and says, “Oh God, look at all of the foreigners. We’ve got a problem at UT.”
Well, we don’t have racial quotas at UT. You get into UT automatically if you’re in the top three percent of your graduating class. And then, the more I looked into it, he tweeted, “What’s worse for America Jews or Muslims?” He made a bunch of bigoted comments and racially charged comments. He said, “You know the most angry people in the world are white, educated women.” No wonder you’re divorced!
And the problem is, my party is infiltrated by these people. We have these, you know, “I’m just raising questions,” you know, conspiracy nuts. We have these “masculinity, which means women shouldn’t vote” people. We need to get rid of these people. We have faced this problem before, and we need to get rid of these people.
