“The only thing we discussed was how a mountain can be protected with few people and new technologies. Sofia Municipality has absolutely nothing to do with the security of Vitosha Nature Park,” Sofia Mayor Vassil Terziev told reporters when asked to comment on the issue of security at the park and remarks by criminal psychologist Rosen Yordanov, who said that Terziev had an agreement with Ivaylo Kalushev for the latter to provide security at Vitosha Nature Park.
Ivaylo Kalushev fired the shots at Okolchitsa, Associate Professor Dr. Aleksandar Aleksandrov, head of the Clinic of Forensic Medicine and Deontology at Sofia’s Aleksandrovska University Hospital, said last Monday at a news conference concerning the investigation into the deaths of six people in the area of the Petrohan lodge and below Okolchitsa Peak.
The Petrohan-Okolchitsa murders case is a high-profile criminal case in which five men and a 15-year-old boy met a violent death between February 1 and 8, 2026. Their bodies were found at two remote mountain locations in Northwestern Bulgaria: a lodge near the Petrohan Pass and a camper van near Okolchitsa Peak. Forensic experts established that all six died of gunshot wounds. Law enforcement officials said the principal leads they followed, based on ballistics findings, the causes of death have been identified as suicide at the lodge and homicide and suicide in the camper.
“The problem with Vitosha is that when there were 300 people protecting the park during socialism, there are now only a few, and they can be counted on one hand,” Mayor Terziev said. He stressed that security at the park is not within the remit of Sofia Municipality.
“Everything I have said has been public and is also known to the prosecution,” Terziev said when asked about the money he had given to the Petrohan group.
“These ‘coincidences’ are interesting – similar things always happen just before important political events. Naturally, this raises questions,” Terziev said in response to a question about the prosecution service’s actions. The Mayor expressed hope that the expert assessments would be completed as quickly as possible so that there could be clarity for the public and institutions could also focus on other pressing issues facing the country.
Regarding reports of possible crimes against children, the Sofia mayor said that when a crime is committed against a child, an entire life can be destroyed. Penalties for such crimes should be much more severe, Terziev said.
Criminal psychologist Rosen Yordanov said last Monday that Sofia Mayor Vassil Terziev had an agreement with Ivaylo Kalushev for the latter to provide security at Vitosha Nature Park, at a news conference, where he presented the conclusions of a psychological assessment in the Petrohan case.
Terziev said in February that he had donated BGN 251,000 to the Petrohan organization. “This is my money, on which I have paid taxes, and I decided that I wanted to give it to support a cause. If you ask me, I would give it again,” the Sofia mayor said at a briefing at the Sofia Municipal Council at the time. He also said that he personally knew the victims near Petrohan. “Everyone who has had contact with them can say the same thing: good, modestly living people who chose to fight an uneven and often brutal enemy. None of us knows exactly what led to the tragedy. But what is happening now is a disgrace,” the Sofia Mmayor said in a post on his Facebook profile.
Later in February, Terziev said that the last time he had been at the Petrohan lodge was in June-July 2025. According to him, he had donated around EUR 70,000-80,000 to Ivaylo Kalushev.
