A bicycle ride marking European Mobility Week, joined by dozens of cyclists, took place in Sofia on Sunday morning.
The initiative, organized by Sofia Municipality, with the support of the Sofia Urban Mobility Center and the Embassy of Denmark, is part of European Mobility Week and followed part of the route used for the historic finish of the Bulgarian stage of the Giro d’Italia. In May this year, Sofia hosted the finish of the third stage of the prestigious international cycling race.
Sofia Mayor Vassil Terziev welcomed the residents who, on their day off, left their cars behind and chose to get on their bicycles and join the initiative. He highlighted Sofia Municipality’s efforts to expand the city’s cycling network in order to achieve greater connectivity and make cycling a viable alternative means of transportation.
Terziev reiterated his ambition to complete his term with 30 km of new cycling routes, not only along streets, but also in parks and shared spaces, as well as by connecting existing cycling routes.
“We owe it to the people who want to get around by bicycle, and that motivates us to work even harder,” Terziev said.
In August, Sofia Municipality launched an online survey on new bicycle lanes in Sofia. The platform aims to gather residents’ views on the need for additional cycling infrastructure, giving citizens the opportunity to participate directly, entirely online, in the planning and development of the urban environment.
