Bill O’Reilly stands up and cheers every time he sees President Donald Trump play golf, he said — because he’s concerned the 80-year-old commander in chief isn’t getting enough rest.
Appearing Tuesday on Newsmax, anchor Rob Finnerty asked the longtime conservative journalist why he urged the president to take August off.
O’Reilly referenced the recent 9/11 memorial at the Pentagon, and claims Trump had fallen asleep during the service, in his answer:
ROB FINNERTY: I know that you’ve known the president for a long time. Your friends, you talk on the phone. Why did you want him to take some time off in August? What were you seeing?
BILL O’REILLY: Well, he’s 80. I mean, you know. Come on. And there’s not a person I know that works harder than Donald Trump works.
I think he’s the hardest working president. Lincoln might be in there because he had to deal with the Civil War, of course, but the guy is just a work machine and it wears you down.
You know, this week to me is one of the worst because I got to work, you know, promoting Confronting America because it comes out today.
And, you know, I need a nap. Now, I’m not as old as he is, but there’s not that big a gap. And I think that I’m glad he got to Doonbeg over in Ireland.
You know, he’s got to be, he’s got to give himself a break because there’s a lot of complicated stuff he’s dealing with now.
FINNERTY: Yeah, I get it. And I agree with you when you said that everybody needs time off.
We just had a president who had cognitive issues. He was falling off bikes. We remember seeing the video of him napping at the beach.
How much do you think that Donald Trump’s schedule, his frenetic pace, how much of that do you think is like his way of proving that even at 80, he is nowhere near what Joe Biden was or is?
O’REILLY: You know, I don’t know if he has to do that, but he certainly wants to connote energy and authority. And so he doesn’t want to ever show weakness, ever. And getting tired, I guess to him is weak.
FINNERTY: Is that a mistake?
O’REILLY: He fell asleep. I, you know, look, everybody has to live their lives.
But he fell asleep in a Pentagon 9/11 service just for a fraction. And you and I have done this, I’m sure, you know, kind of just doze off. And, you know, that shows you that look [there] is only so much you can push your body. There’s only so much.
FINNERTY: Yeah.
O’REILLY: And with all of these very, very serious things in play that he’s got to deal with, you know, every time he plays golf, I applaud.
I give him a Standing ‘O.’ Good. Get out there, play some golf. Take a nap. You know, have a Big Mac, whatever you want to do. But give yourself a break.
Trump took a quick, two-day jaunt to Ireland over the weekend for the Irish Open, which was held at his family’s golf club.
