Brooke Rollins, President Donald Trump’s agriculture secretary, told MAGA influencer Benny Johnson that she’s “really proud” that six million Americans have lost their SNAP benefits.
Her comments came during a Monday appearance on Johnson’s The Benny Show, as the two discussed what the influencer praised as Rollins’ “unbelievable work” to root out “mass fraud.”
Referencing the SNAP program — federally funded food stamps — specifically, the agriculture secretary claimed, “In the blue states, it’s just wheels off, right? It’s the Wild West. It’s just, ‘Give as many people as much money as possible,’ as you’re working to buy votes.”
Alledging that she’s found “hundreds of thousands” of examples of fraud, Rollins continued, “We’ve moved almost six million people off of the SNAP program. Some of it’s welfare-to-work, some of it’s getting rid of illegals, and some of it is the fraud, but six million people out of 40-plus million. That’s a pretty good chunk, and I’m really proud of that work.”
According to a recent report from the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, though, more than 1.2 million kids lost their SNAP benefits between July 2025 and 2026, with children making up 43% of the total drop in participants.
As experts told PBS News, Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill,” which cut at least $1 trillion in federal spending from the nation’s social safety net, has been a major driver of the decline. The law expanded work requirements for adults on SNAP. It will also soon obligate states to shoulder a larger share of the program’s costs.
“SNAP is not, despite the name, supplemental,” Priya Fielding-Singh, the director of policy and programs at George Washington University’s Global Food Institute, told PBS. “SNAP is essential. SNAP is critical. SNAP is how families feed their kids enough food.”
She also added, “For kids to lose that benefit is really devastating.”
