White House officials reportedly “privately researched” whether former AI and crypto czar David Sacks “could personally profit” by blocking certain regulations, The Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday.

Sacks was appointed to his post by President Donald Trump in December 2024. He stepped down from the role in March 2026. He subsequently joined the Council of Advisors on Science and Technology.

WSJ also reported Sacks “has become a particular point of friction for some White House officials” since assuming his new role:

In the past six months, other administration officials have grown concerned about how far the technology has come, and how little the administration initially did to scrutinize it, people familiar with the matter said. Sacks’s power was on display again this week, when Trump declared Monday that the only AI regulation the U.S. needs is a ‘strong and smart president,’ following a call from lawmakers and some AI CEOs for a coordinated slowdown of model development to prevent cyberattacks or other disasters. Hours later, Trump called in to an “All-In” event hosted by the tech podcast that Sacks co-hosts. Sacks was on stage with Huang at a live taping, when Huang, clad in his usual black leather jacket, took the call.

Sacks told CBS News on Sept. 15 that he’s not convinced by worries that AI is a threat to humanity.

“I think this is becoming a panic,” he said. He pointed to November’s midterms as one potential reason AI-related stories and fears are getting a lot of attention. “We’re in an election season, and there is an incentive for political actors to try and amplify the fear. And I think this is a moment to really calm down a little bit and look at the issue rationally.”

Sacks also said it’s up to OpenAI, Anthropic, and others to ensure their services and products are safe.

“First and foremost, it is on them to make their products safe,” he insisted. “They should tell us how they should do that. If they can’t do that, they should step aside for people who can do that.”

Sacks also agreed with Trump’s claims from Trump that the United States is falling behind China in the AI race.
