The drama Brace Your Heart, directed by Swedish filmmaker Amanda Kernell and co-produced by Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Iceland and Bulgaria, has received the Special Jury Award in the Platform programme of Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), the organizers announced on their website. The Bulgarian producers are the Kalinov brothers through their production company Invictus.The production was part of the Platform programme alongside eleven more films. The first prize in this programme went to the Indian film Angh, directed by Teja Rio. Under the festival’s rules, the winner of the section – the Indian historical drama – will automatically qualify for the 2027 Academy Awards race for Best International Feature Film. Brace Your Heart is based on an original screenplay by writer and director Amanda Kernell, who returns to northern Sweden with a story set in a remote Sami community, where reindeer herding forms the foundation of the local way of life and livelihood. The film centres on a young woman trying to meet the expectations and traditions of her family, community and culture while remaining true to her own heart. “We would like to recognize Brace Your Heart with an Honourable Mention. For how its apparent simplicity reflects the complex nature of the world today, its powerful central performance and beautiful visual journey,” said the Platform jury in a statement on the TIFF website. Amanda Kernell said about her film that it brings together the memories and experiences of people connected to reindeer herding, exploring themes including early loss, love and the difficult choice between confrontation and forgiveness. Kernell first gained international recognition with the critically acclaimed Sami Blood, which won her the Best Director award for a debut feature in the Venice Days section of the Venice International Film Festival in 2016. Her second feature, Charter, had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival and was selected as Sweden’s submission for the Academy Awards in the Best International Feature Film category, Invictus added. The TIFF award marks another success for Brace Your Heart which was also selected for the official competition of the San Sebastian International Film Festival, producers Invictus announced. The film is also set to be released in Bulgaria.
