Director Milcho Manchevski is coming to Sofia for the premiere of his new documentary film as part of Sofia DocuMental, the festival team said on Monday. The director will be in Sofia in person on September 26 for the screening of “Good People,” dedicated to the consequences of the fire at the Pulse disco in Kocani, eastern North Macedonia, which claimed the lives of 63 people, and injured more than 150. This year’s edition of the Sofia DocuMental festival has added two new competitions, one for Best International Human Rights Film and another for Best Bulgarian Documentary Film. The documentary film festival will take place from September 24 to October 4 under the motto “Keep Your Eyes Peeled.”
“An uncompromising reflection on grief, survival and the tenacious power of human connection, the film follows with ascetic restraint the consequences of a fire in a nightclub in Kocani, North Macedonia, which took the lives of 63 young people. As the title itself suggests, the film looks at the goodness that is present even in the darkest moments of inhuman fear and deep human anguish,” the festival team added. After the screening, the audience will be able to meet Manchevski in a discussion about trauma, guilt, responsibility and goodness.
Manchevski is the director of “Before the Rain”, which won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival and was nominated for an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film. He has over 50 international awards for titles such as “Dust”, “Shadows”, “Mothers” and “Kaymak”.
