Radoslav Rosenov won Bulgaria’s first medal at the European Boxing Championships for men and women, which are being held in Sofia. In the quarterfinals of the men’s 60kg category, the Bulgarian defeated Russia’s Vsevolod Shumkov by a split decision. The victory sent Rosenov through to the semi-finals and guaranteed him at least a bronze medal.
Rosenov and Shumkov engaged in a fierce battle from the opening bell, which suited the Bulgarian perfectly. He won the first round, forcing Shumkov to become even more aggressive. The Russian managed to open a cut above the Bulgarian boxer’s right eyebrow, but this did not stop Rosenov, who had already built a solid lead on the judges’ scorecards.
In the third round, Rosenov opted for a more defensive approach to prevent his injury from worsening. This allowed Shumkov to take the initiative, but by then the Russian had run out of time to turn the fight around.
For a place in the final, the 22-year-old Rosenov will face Spain’s Andres Hernandez, who defeated Ireland’s Jude Gallagher in another quarterfinal.
