The United States could “destroy” Iran in “five days,” conservative historian Victor Davis Hanson said on an episode of The PBD Podcast Thursday, but doesn’t because “We really do believe that the Iranian people deserve a different government.”
Hanson told host Patrick Bet-David, “I mean, you really believe that the United States military, if they said destroy the Iranian regime and destroy Iran, they could do it in a week. They could do it in five days, and Israel could do it in six weeks.”
“In the case of Israel, they’re afraid that if they were to do that, they would lose all of the support of the United States. And the Trump administration knows that he’s got public opinion, and half the country, or more than that, would not approve of that type of annihilation. We could blow up Kharg Island in 24 hours, but we don’t do that. Why we don’t do it? It’s not because we’re bought off or there’s conspiracy theories. We really do believe that the Iranian people deserve a different government, and that government we hope would solve the problem,” he concluded.
President Donald Trump claimed in March that the United States had won the war in Iran. He has repeatedly suggested (and failed to provide proof) that Iran’s leadership is on the brink of making a deal that would resolve the war.
The war with Iran has so far cost the United States at least $38 billion and has sparked an international energy crisis; the United States has also so far failed to achieve any military wins of note. On Tuesday, Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) introduced articles of impeachment against Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.
Also on Thursday, Trump told Axios’ Barak Ravid he is debating what move to make next. “I have a big decision coming up. Do I want to go in and annihilate them [the Iranian regime] or do I not? It’s a big decision. Anything could happen to me,” Trump said.
