The Washington Post announced Monday the newspaper will not publish photos from presidential events until midnight tonight.
“The Washington Post will not publish any photographs of today’s presidential events — including [President Donald] Trump’s departure from the White House and his events at the United Nations in New York — until midnight Eastern Time, joining a collective effort with photographers in other newsrooms covering the White House in a show of support of the banned outlets,” said spokesperson Olivia Petersen in a statement.
The update is in line with a statement released by White House TV pool rotational chair and Fox News Washington Bureau Chief Bryan Boughton Monday morning. Boughton said Fox News, ABC News, CBS News, CNN, and NBC News decided to pull all of their cameras from the TV pool in response to Trump’s decision to ban CNN, Politico, and MS NOW from the White House.
“Effective today, the TV pool will not be covering events designated as pool coverage of the President. This follows the White House’s position preventing CNN from fulfilling its assigned pool duties. There will be no replacement pool put in place,” Boughton wrote.
The impact of the ban was also obvious at this morning’s ribbon-cutting ceremony held at the White House. The president was completely drowned out by Marine One while speaking during the event.
Newsmax’s Bianca de la Garza was forced to concede being unable to hear the president was evidence that the ban “could be backfiring just a little bit.”
“So there is no microphone because, there’s no microphone because the pool cameras aren’t there. So, maybe, Tim [Graham], this is one example of it backfiring just a little bit,” she said.
CNN, MS NOW, and Politico filed a federal lawsuit in response to the ban Monday.
“The exclusion of CNN’s, MS NOW’s, and Politico’s reporters from the White House accordingly inflicts irreparable harm to these news organizations,” the lawsuit reads. “The organizations, whose very purpose is to report national news, depend on individual reporters to gather information firsthand at the White House. As a result of the ban, they have lost the ability to perform essential newsgathering at the seat of the Executive Branch, where critically important newsworthy events occur every day.”
The filing also names White House Communications Director Steven Cheung, Secret Service Director Sean Curran, and White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles.
