Jewellery designer Bogdana Topreva’s retrospective Obsession will open in Sofia on Wednesday, tracing more than 30 years of artistic exploration and experimentation, the artist said.
The exhibition opens at Sofia Press Gallery on September 23 and examines her experiments with the form, materials and meaning of jewellery.
It brings together works from different stages of Topreva’s career alongside her latest experiments. Moving beyond a chronological survey, the exhibition traces her sustained interest in jewellery’s possibilities and the boundaries between adornment, sign, memory and symbol.
For more than three decades, Topreva has regarded jewellery as more than an adornment for the body. She sees it as a means of understanding oneself and giving tangible expression to one’s place in the world. In her work, materials have gradually acquired a role beyond creating form, becoming a medium for memory and meaning.
She experiments with silver, copper, brass, aluminium, polymers, textiles and fragments drawn from nature and architecture. Her interests have moved from objects to images, from images to narrative and gradually towards space.
This approach informs her two latest collections, Invisible Roofs / Sofia-Paris. They are based on drone images captured first above Sofia and later above Paris. Urban architecture provides the basis for jewellery, as aerial views of rooftops turn familiar cityscapes into compositions of lines, structures, colours and shapes, she said.
Topreva was born in Sofia and graduated in industrial design from the National Academy of Art in 1992. She won the Union of Bulgarian Artists’ award at its Jewellery Section’s first exhibition in 1998. In 2012 and 2025, she participated in the Cité internationale des arts residency programme in Paris, where she presented her work. Since 1992, she has taken part in numerous group exhibitions in Bulgaria and abroad. She has held eight solo exhibitions in Bratislava, Budapest, Vienna, Paris and Sofia.
