In Bulgarian-teaching schools in Moldova, the first lesson on September 22 will be dedicated to the contribution of Bessarabian Bulgarians to the proclamation of Bulgaria’s independence in 1908. The initiative is being held for the first time under the auspices of Moldova’s Ministry of Education and Research on the occasion of Bulgaria’s Independence Day.
At the Ministry’s recommendation, approximately 10 minutes of the first lesson will be devoted to presenting the historical event and the role of Bessarabian Bulgarians in it. The topic will be discussed regardless of whether students have Bulgarian language and literature classes on that day, the institution said.
As part of the proposed activities, students will learn about figures born in Bessarabia who were directly involved in the proclamation of Bulgaria’s independence.
Special attention is recommended to be paid to Alexander Malinov, a Bessarabia-born prime minister of Bulgaria in 1908 and author of the Manifesto of Independence, under whose leadership Bulgaria proclaimed its independence.
Among the figures the Ministry proposes to present is also Danail Nikolaev, a native of Bolhrad, who served as minister of war in Malinov’s government and was among the signatories of the act proclaiming Bulgaria’s independence.
Dr Ivan Duminica, Head of the Interethnic Relations Policy Service at Moldova’s Education Ministry said: “We want September 22 to be more than just a date on the calendar. We want Bulgarian students in Moldova to understand that Bessarabian Bulgarians played a direct role in one of the key events in modern Bulgarian history. Malinov and Nikolaev contributed directly to the proclamation of independence in 1908, and it is important for young Bessarabian Bulgarians in Moldova to preserve this shared historical memory.”
Duminica also said that with this initiative also highlights the friendly relations with Bulgaria, which is an important partner of Moldova on its European path.
According to the Ministry, the initiative will give students an opportunity to learn more about the contribution of Bessarabian Bulgarians to the history of modern Bulgaria and to gain a better understanding of the historical and cultural ties between the Bulgarian community in Bessarabia and Bulgaria.
