Singer Chris Brown has lashed out after a Texas state rep apologized for helping to recognize the controversial singer.
Rep. Venton Jones (D) joined Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) Saturday at AT&T Stadium in Arlington to give Brown — who has been accused of domestic violence — a state resolution recognizing his achievements in music and entertainment.
Crockett was slammed for trying to honor Brown, and Venton later appeared on journalist Don Lemon’s podcast and apologized, prompting a fed up Brown to speak out Tuesday night on Instagram.
“Funny thing is…YALL CAME TO ME WITH THIS ! NOT THE OTHER WAY AROUND,” Brown wrote on an Instagram story. “I was minding my damn business. My shows in Dallas were already sold out. I ain’t ask to be honored because I knew some sh*t like this would happen and @ventonjonestx immediately started tap dancing and apologizing because he didn’t wanna lose voters and support.
“I have a great idea,” Brown continued. “How about yall leave me the f*ck alone and let me focus on the fans that spent their money to actually see and support me.”
Crockett embraced Brown on stage and talked about “experiencing Black joy at the highest level” without apparently acknowledging his lengthy history of domestic violence allegations.
Brown was at the center of a firestorm in 2009 when he pleaded guilty to assaulting then-girlfriend, Rihanna. At the time, a photo of Rihanna with a black eye made headlines.
In his apology Tuesday, Jones said he wanted to address Black women specifically.
“I want to offer an apology,” Jones said.
“I think this is a very important conversation around domestic violence and I want to offer my apology to Black women, to women and to anyone who has experienced domestic violence and really express that it was not my intention to stoke the traumas that go into that, as well as the background of this situation,” he said.
