Continue the Change supports the protest of musicians from Bulgarian National Radio (BNR) and their demands for sustainable funding and decent pay, according to a statement issued by the party’s press office on Saturday.
“For over a year, musicians from the BNR Symphony Orchestra, Big Band, Folk Music Orchestra and Mixed Choir have been calling for a solution. Discussions have been held, proposals have been put forward, and the institutions have been given sufficient opportunities to find a workable model. Instead, the problem continues to be postponed,” the party said.
Continue the Change said that it is unacceptable in a European country for a musician from the BNR Symphony Orchestra to resort to a hunger strike. In their view, this is not simply a matter of salaries, but a question of whether Bulgaria wants to have professional musical ensembles of its own that create, perform and preserve the country’s musical culture.
According to the party, the problem cannot be solved through one-off pay increases and internal cost-cutting. What is needed is a sustainable model that guarantees both the normal functioning of BNR as a public-service broadcaster and the future of its musical ensembles.
Continue the Change called on the state to immediately provide the additional funding needed by BNR’s musical ensembles in order to address the immediate financial and staffing crisis. The 2027 state budget, the statement said, should include sustainable funding for the development of BNR’s four musical ensembles. The Culture Ministry, Finance Ministry, BNR and representatives of the musical ensembles should immediately begin work on changing the ensembles’ legal status and funding model, the party said.
“Bulgaria needs a strong public-service broadcaster. And a strong public-service broadcaster needs strong professional musical ensembles. They are not an expense that simply needs to be covered. They are part of Bulgaria’s cultural infrastructure and collective memory,” the statement said.
Continue the Change expressed its support for the BNR musicians’ protest and called on the institutions to make a concrete commitment, backed by specific funding and a specific deadline for reaching a solution.
