The second International Black Sea Theatre Festival opened in Varna on Wednesday with the premiere of Agatha Christie’s Witness for the Prosecution. The festival, organized by the Stoyan Bachvarov Drama Theatre in Varna, runs through September 28 and features a selection of Bulgarian and international productions, as well as a parallel programme of workshops, exhibitions, book presentations and thematic discussions.
Ten performances make up the programme of the festival.
The international selection will introduce audiences to productions exploring themes such as war and exile, life and death, human vulnerability, love, guilt and difficult moral choices, the organizers said. On Thursday evening, the Ahmet Vefik Pasha State Theatre in Bursa, Turkiye, will present The Troupe of Migrant Dreamers by Erkan Akcelik, directed by Ilknur Gunes. Later in the evening, at 8 p.m., the Hungarian Theatre in Cluj, Romania, will present Eugene Ionesco’s The King Dies, directed by Gabor Tompa.
On September 26, the Italian company AriaTeatro will present Rita by Marta Buchaca, directed by Alberto Giusta. Buchaca is the recipient of the Frederic Roda de Teatre Award for 2019. The Croatian National Theatre in Varazdin will follow with a performance of Waiting for Orestes, based on a text by Lada Kastelan and directed by Livija Pandur. Nina Violic received an award from the jury of the 35th Marulic Days for her portrayal of Clytemnestra.
On September 25, the Bulgarian selection will feature the Blagoevgrad Drama Theatre’s Dracula, directed by Stayko Murdjev and starring Koyna Ruseva, and Oh My God, a one-man show by Hristo Mutafchiev, directed by Stoyan Radev and produced at the Ivan Vazov National Theatre. On September 27, audiences will be able to see Turgenev’s A Month in the Village, presented by the Ruse Drama Theatre and directed by Stoyan Radev Ge.K., as well as Part of a Collection, a theater-and-music performance based on texts by Dimitar Voev and directed by Ivan Yurukov. Diana Dobreva’s production of Shakespeare’s classic A Midsummer Night’s Dream, created with the troupe of the Nikolay Binev Youth Theater, will be presented on September 28.
A highlight of the parallel programme is an acting masterclass by renowned director and acting coach Pico Berkowitch, who is a certified Meisner Technique instructor. Workshops in playwriting and stage design will be led by Thea Denoljubova and Boris Dalchev. Journalist Georgi Toshev will present a book and a film dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the birth of actress Leda Taseva. Dutch theater artist and painter Jan Struve will close the festival with an exhibition of works painted during performances.
