Bulgaria’s minimum wage will increase by more than 6.5%, while public-sector salaries will rise by over 5%, Progressive Bulgaria (PB) Floor Leader Petar Vitanov told reporters here in Parliament on Friday.
Teachers’ salaries are expected to increase by more than 7.5%, while the government also plans to resume suspended social payments and expand tax relief for children, Vitanov said, commenting on protests demanding higher incomes, the budget and trade union positions.
He said the planned increases represented a real improvement compared with the previous budget proposal discussed about four months ago.
Vitanov said protests calling for higher wages were justified and deserved support when aimed at securing decent pay and working conditions. He added that he had spoken with representatives of the Confederation of Independent Trade Unions in Bulgaria (CITUB) and heard the protesters’ arguments.
Rising living costs, including the impact of the two wars being waged in proximity to Bulgaria, were legitimate reasons for people to demand higher incomes, he said. However, he stressed the need to balance wage increases with maintaining this country’s fiscal stability.
Commenting on criticism he had directed at CITUB President Plamen Dimitrov in a Facebook post, Vitanov said his remarks were personal and did not reflect his attitude towards trade unions. He expressed strong support for trade union unity but accused Dimitrov of applying a double standard, arguing that the union leader had not reacted similarly when pensions and salaries were frozen under previous GERB-led governments.
Vitanov said the minimum wage parameters had been agreed upon by trade unions and employers, noting that CITUB representatives had participated in discussions in the parliamentary committee. He said he did not understand what had prompted the subsequent protests.
Asked whether lawmakers’ salaries would be cut, Vitanov said his parliamentary group had not increased them but had indexed them at the end of March. He added that MPs’ remuneration had been frozen 15–20 days after they took office, describing this as the first such instance in 35 years.
