Interviewed on bTV on Tuesday, Defence Minister Dimitar Stoyanov said that wreckage from the drones that attacked the two commercial vessels in the Black Sea needs to be recovered in order to determine who they belonged to. At present, there is no such information, he added.
“We cannot confirm whether they were Russian or Ukrainian. To be certain, we need to recover the necessary drone wreckage if it surfaces, or one of the parties needs to claim responsibility. Neither has happened, so there is no way for us to confirm what kind of drones they were, Stoyanov said. He added that he had his own opinion about whose drone it was but could not disclose it because there was no evidence.
“Our assessment is that the attack was probably carried out using unmanned aerial vehicles and naval drones. It is absurd to suggest that the drones were misled. This was an attack, and an unacceptable one, on commercial vessels. This was not an accident but a deliberate attack,” the Minister said.
According to the Defence Minister, there is no information about the vessels’ cargoes. No survivors had been found from the sunken vessel by the time of the interview. “No lifeboats or signs of life were found,” the Minister said. ”The other vessel is on fire and is highly likely to sink. One of the injured people is in critical condition, having suffered burns over more than 40% of his body,” Stoyanov added.
“Opposition leaders are engaging in excessive speculation regarding national security. Perhaps they are concerned about the pre-election situation, or perhaps they are worried about the polls,” Stoyanov said. “A political party leader cannot claim that we have failed to protect our territorial waters. Our territorial waters extend 12 nautical miles, followed by a further 12-nautical-mile contiguous zone, while the exclusive economic zone extends 200 nautical miles,” Stoyanov added.
The Minister said that Bulgaria was part of the hybrid war between Ukraine and Russia and quoted Prime Minister Rumen Radev as having repeatedly said that providing weapons to Ukraine would draw Bulgaria into the conflict.
“There is no anti-drone system capable of operating at a range of 150 km. No such system has been developed. Anti-drone systems have an effective range of 8–10 km, or 15 km at most,” Stoyanov said, adding that Bulgaria has no sovereignty over its exclusive economic zone.
The minister said that Bulgaria’s NATO allies had been informed of what had happened. Stoyanov also said that there were risks to national security, but that there was no information indicating a risk of an environmental disaster.
