Washington Post photojournalist Heidi Levine was hospitalized Friday after being beaten by Israeli settlers in the occupied West Bank, with harrowing video showing her bloodied on the ground and telling those trying to help her, “I’m going to die.”
Levine was covering the annual Palestinian olive harvest in Abu Falah, near Ramallah, when dozens of masked settlers descended on the area, burning olive trees and hurling rocks at villagers, according to Reuters witnesses.
Video circulated online by independent journalist Jasper Nathaniel showed Levine sitting on a dirt road immediately after the reported attack as people around her urged her to flee.

“They took everything,” Levine said, referring to her equipment. “They took all my stuff.”

Asked if she was OK, Levine replied: “No,” before repeating: “I’m going to die.”
As those filming and assisting her repeatedly told her to run, amid a further attack by the settlers, Levine could be heard saying she “can’t.” Several men eventually carried her away, with blood visible on her hands and body.

Reuters reported that around 80 settlers, some carrying gas canisters and others using slings to launch rocks, moved into the olive groves as Palestinian families gathered for the harvest. At least one armed settler was seen firing a gun.

Levine later spoke from a hospital bed, with her left hand bandaged.
“I was attacked, pushed to the ground. Luckily I had my flak jacket and helmet, otherwise I probably wouldn’t even be here, because they just kept kicking me and kicking me,” she told Reuters.
She said Palestinian colleagues ultimately intervened and helped get her to an ambulance before she was transferred to a hospital in Ramallah. She was reportedly in stable condition.

Israeli military vehicles arrived during the violence, according to Reuters, but the attack continued. Soldiers reportedly fired tear gas in the direction of Palestinians who had moved away from the approaching jeeps.
Levine has spent years documenting the West Bank for The Post, including the expansion of Israeli settlements and escalating attacks on Palestinian communities.
Earlier this month, she co-bylined the newspaper’s report on an AFP photographer beaten by settlers while covering the same olive harvest.

The Washington Post later released a statement from the paper’s executive editor Matt Murray on X:
This morning, a Washington Post photographer, Heidi Levine, was attacked by Israeli settlers while reporting in the West Bank. She was wearing visible markings clearly identifying her as a journalist. While we are relieved that Heidi has received medical care and is safe, we are outraged by this unwarranted attack on a journalist doing her job and urge a thorough investigation and follow-through from authorities.
