Journalism school will teach you a lot. You’ll learn how to interview sources, write on deadline, follow AP style, report ethically and hopefully develop the kind of skepticism that makes you question everything. A politician’s press release or a “study” funded by the company selling the product it praises will make you think twice.

However, the reality is that journalism school doesn’t always prepare you for every practical skill you’ll need once you graduate and enter the industry.

The modern journalism landscape is constantly changing, and the journalists who thrive are often the ones willing to develop skills outside the traditional syllabus. Whether you plan to work in a newsroom, become a freelancer or build a personal brand, here are five skills worth learning before you graduate.

1. Basic Coding and Data Skills

No, you don’t need to get a minor in software engineering; but understanding the basics of coding can make you a much more versatile journalist.

Learning a little HTML and CSS can help you understand how websites work and troubleshoot simple formatting issues. Familiarity with spreadsheets is also essential, especially if you’re working with budgets, election results, public records or other large sets of information.

Even basic knowledge of tools like Excel or Google Sheets can help you sort data, identify trends and find stories that might otherwise be buried in thousands of rows.

The goal is to become more comfortable with the technology shaping the way journalism is produced and consumed.

2. Money Management, Especially if You Freelance

Freelance journalism can be rewarding, but good reporting and writing doesn’t automatically mean you’ll be good at running the business side of freelancing. You may need to negotiate rates, send invoices, track expenses, budget for inconsistent income and understand how taxes work when no employer is automatically taking them out of your paycheck.

Even journalists with full-time jobs can benefit from basic financial literacy. Understanding your salary, benefits, retirement options and the value of your skills can help you make better career decisions and advocate for yourself professionally.

Journalism is often treated like a calling, but journalists still deserve to be paid fairly. Understanding money is part of making sure you can build a sustainable career.

3. Ethical and Responsible Use of AI

AI is already changing journalism, which means pretending it doesn’t exist probably isn’t a winning strategy.

That said, journalists need to approach AI differently than people using it to write social media captions or plan their grocery lists. AI can be useful for brainstorming research questions, organizing information, identifying patterns and helping journalists understand complicated topics.

However, it should never replace verification.

AI tools can produce inaccurate information, fabricate sources and reflect biases in their training data. Anything generated by AI should be treated as a starting point, not as a reliable source or final product. Journalists also need to think carefully about what information they upload into AI tools, particularly when working with confidential documents or sensitive information.

The most valuable skill is knowing when not to use AI just as much as knowing how to use it.

4. Multimedia Storytelling

Being a strong writer is still incredibly important, but today’s journalists are increasingly expected to think beyond the written article.

Basic skills in photography, video editing, podcasting and social media can make you more adaptable in a competitive industry that’s trying to reach audiences across multiple channels and content types. You don’t have to master every format, but understanding how stories change across platforms is incredibly valuable.

A great long-form article might become a short video, a podcast discussion, an Instagram carousel or a newsletter. Knowing how to adapt your reporting without losing accuracy or context is a skill that can make your work and your career go much further.

5. Personal Branding and Professional Networking

The phrase “personal brand” can make some journalists cringe, and honestly, that’s understandable—but building a professional presence doesn’t mean turning yourself into an influencer. It means making it easier for editors, employers and potential sources to understand what you do and what you care about.

Keep your portfolio updated. Maintain professional relationships. Let people know about the stories you’re proud of. Reach out to journalists whose work you admire. And most importantly, don’t wait until you desperately need a job to start networking.

Journalism is a relationship-driven industry. Your reputation for being reliable, ethical and easy to work with can be just as important as the skills listed on your resume.

In Summary

Journalism school can give you an incredible foundation, but your education shouldn’t stop at graduation.

The most successful journalists are lifelong learners. They adapt to new technology, understand the business realities of the industry and continuously look for new ways to tell important stories.

You don’t need to know everything before you graduate, but developing a few skills outside the traditional journalism curriculum can give you more options, more confidence and, ultimately, a better chance of building the career you actually want.
